FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a painting project?

Exterior work fills up fastest — once the weather turns in spring, the calendar moves quickly, so reaching out a few weeks ahead gives you the widest choice of dates. Interior projects are easier to schedule at short notice, especially in late autumn and winter. If you have a fixed deadline like a listing date, a party or a new baby, tell us up front and we will work backwards from it.

Do you paint year-round in Upstate New York, or only in summer?

Both, but the seasons split the work. Exterior painting needs surface and air temperatures to stay within the coating manufacturer's range, and it needs a dry window either side of application — that generally means late spring through autumn here. Interior work runs all winter, and winter is often the best time to book it: schedules are more open and the house is closed up anyway.

What actually happens on the first day of a project?

We walk the space with you and confirm the scope, colours and sheens before anything is opened. Then we protect the area — floors, furniture, fixtures and landscaping — and begin prep. Prep is the majority of a good paint job, so the first day usually looks like cleaning, sanding, filling and masking rather than colour going on. That is normal and it is what makes the finish last.

Do I need to be home while you work?

No. Plenty of our customers are at work while we paint. We just need access and a quick conversation at the start about colours, access and anything you would rather we did not move. We will check in on progress and always walk the finished work with you before we call it done.

How do you protect my furniture, floors and landscaping?

Inside, furniture is moved to the centre of the room and covered, floors are protected wall to wall, and fixtures, switch plates and hardware come off rather than getting taped around. Outside, we cover walkways and plantings, and pre-wet landscaping before any washing so nothing is left sitting in runoff. Everything gets put back at the end of each day where practical.

What kind of paint and products do you use?

We match the product to the surface rather than using one paint for everything. Walls, trim, cabinetry, decks and metal roofs all want different chemistry. In general we use premium low-VOC waterborne coatings, and for cabinetry and trim we use waterborne lacquers and urethanes made for that job rather than wall paint. If you have a brand preference, tell us and we will work with it.

My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?

It can. Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint, and federal rules govern how painted surfaces are disturbed in those properties. If your home falls into that category, tell us early — we will discuss how the surfaces will be handled and what testing may be sensible before any sanding or scraping begins. It is a fair question to put to any contractor you are considering, not just us.

Will you move furniture and take down curtains or wall fixtures?

We handle normal furniture moving as part of the job. What we ask you to deal with beforehand is anything fragile, valuable or personal — art, electronics, collections and the contents of shelves or cabinets. If something is very heavy or awkward, flag it during the estimate and we will plan for it rather than discover it on day one.

What if I do not like the colour once it is actually on the wall?

Colour reads very differently at full scale and under your own lighting than it does on a small chip. That is why we encourage sampling on the actual wall and looking at it in daylight and at night before we commit. If you want to change direction after seeing a sample, that is easy. Changing after a room is finished means additional material and labour, so it is worth spending the extra day up front.

How do you handle estimates and scheduling?

Every estimate is free and done on site — we would rather look at the actual surfaces than quote blind from a description. You get a written scope covering what is included, the products and the prep, so you can compare it fairly against anyone else. Once you approve it we lock in dates and confirm colours before we start. Call or text Kevin on (518) 246-5513 to arrange a visit.
